New Medicare cards by April 2018 (in spanish down below)
Did you know Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS.org) is helping you prevent fraud?
The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015, requires the removal of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards by April 2019. This means that all Medicare patients will receive a new card from CMS according to this Act by this summer, but we wanted patient to know in advance and be prepared of this change.
CMS will be removing the Medicare patient’s Social Security Number
(SSN) of all cards and replacing this number for a Medicare Beneficiary
Identifier (MBI) number for the following benefits.
Benefits of having your new Medicare card:
1.To prevent identity theft
2.To protect your personal information
3. To avoid any charge fee when requesting your Medicare number
“We’re taking this step to protect our seniors from fraudulent use of
Social Security numbers which can lead to identity theft and illegal
use of Medicare benefits. We want to be sure that Medicare
beneficiaries and healthcare providers know about these changes well
in advance and have the information they need to make a seamless
transition.” - CMS Administrator Seema Verma
